Extra Information

North Carolina's State Transportation Improvement Plan

Understanding what is going on in this plan will help you understand what kinds of transportation projects are being considered and larger state-level projects that might impact your area.

Local Government Budgets

City/County General Funds:

Many local governments allocate funds for public works, transportation, or community development. Engage with your municipal/county manager, public works director, or city/county council to learn how your project could be included in their budget. It is also important to learn how the funding process works, so be sure to include municipal officials on your project team.

Capital Improvement Programs (CIP)

Larger, long-term projects are often funded through a CIP, which plans for major infrastructure investments. For bigger scale projects, talk to your local planners about funding. You can also advocate for safer design from the beginning in existing CIP projects.

State and Federal funding

A variety of state and federal funds for local projects are typically accessed through your NC Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) or Rural Planning Organizations (RPO).

Places to Explore:

Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)

Administered by the NC Department of Commerce, CDBG funds can support community development activities, which may include public infrastructure improvements in low-to-moderate income areas. Explore this especially if your project can be tied to the improvement of economic conditions in the project area.

Crowdfunding and Community Fundraising

For smaller projects, consider engaging your community in fundraising efforts or using crowdfunding platforms. This can also build strong local ownership of the project.
